About NSL

Humble Beginnings…

Starting from humble beginnings, in 2002 we opened our first rooming house in Port Colborne, Ontario. This was a traditional “boarding house”, and at that time we provided housing to anyone in need of affordable accommodations.

Realizing a need…

Over the next few years, now with many other boarding houses across the Niagara Region, we came to realize that there were countless individuals out there who seemed to be “forgotten” by society for various reasons.

We started helping these individuals by stabilizing their housing, overlooking their uniqueness which many other persons in the housing industry wouldn’t do, mentoring these persons in daily living skills and sometimes just “being there” for them.

To us, this still wasn’t enough. We realized that many of these persons needed more than just a friendly voice or a helping hand. We wanted to create housing with actual support systems built in, taking into consideration other varying needs of these individuals when it came to their mental health, emotional stability and well being while giving them a stable happy home environment, which many of them had never experienced before.

Making a change, making a difference!

In 2007, we opened our first supportive living group home and Niagara Independent Living was born, soon after renamed Niagara Supportive Living, a name which reflected our focus and mission.

Here we grow!

Since then we have been growing “slowly but surely”, now with 5 homes in the Niagara Region and the capacity to house over 90 individuals.

More than ever, we are focusing on our mission to improve the quality of our resident’s lives and building our community! 2011 is our year to shine and work to becoming the most trusted name in Supportive Housing!
